While chicken nuggets might be the reigning option for the fast-food chicken, a new player has appeared over the past few years in a few fast-food restaurant chains. The popcorn chicken is small adequate to pop a piece into the mouth while you are at a gathering or on the go.
It does not need anything fancy or flatware, and every piece batter-fried just to perfection. But not all popcorn chicken is made equal. A few restaurants serve a fantastic recipe and value, while others may fall short. Let’s see where the McDonald’s chicken McBites fit into this scale in the McDonald’s Chicken McBites review.
At the start of 2012, McDonald’s launched their new popcorn chicken-style item and named it McBites. It was the attempt of the brand to keep up with the chicken popcorn joneses. Gene Gagliardi invented the popcorn chicken and was tested on a particular market in 1992 in the United States.
It was made well-liked by Kentucky Fried Chicken, which has launched, discontinued, made the recipe better, and re-launched its popcorn chicken version numerous times. Seeing the chance, McDonald’s jumped on the chicken popcorn bandwagon.
Astonishingly, they did not really taste like McNuggets, and not astonishingly; they did not taste like the version of Kentucky Fried Chicken either. They were just appended to the menu for just a limited time.
Types Of Chicken McBites:
There’re two main types of McBites: the spicy and the regular. The regular Chicken McBites are the ones we will review in this article. The spicy chicken McBites one was similar, but the breading was not as crunchy, and the spice was on the medium level. They were not extra spicy but adequate that you would be reaching for the soda after some bites.
Chicken McBites Review:
The description on the McBites box read something like: “Ready, Steady Pop! Bite into the amazing crunch of the poppable chicken pieces prepared with premium breast meat. They are breaded lightly with a home-style flavor. With the useful holder for the preferred sauce, one dip, and you will experience the wonderful tasting snack and a tasty new manner to love chicken.” Sounds great to me!
Texture & Taste:
I thought the box that the chicken McBites were offered in was an excellent idea but not extremely practical if you are on the move. It is supposed to change into the dipping container to make the eating experience even more enjoyable, but it is not simple to keep the box balanced because it is top-heavy. It is also difficult to reach the pieces at the carton’s bottom without knocking your sauce and carton over.
It takes a bit of practice, I think. The chicken McBites could be offered with any sauce you like, such as the Honey Mustard, Sweet ‘n Sour, Spicy Buffalo, Creamy Ranch, Tangy Barbeque, Chipotle BBQ, Hot Mustard or Sweet Chili. Besides the box, the serving size was less than fantastic. The majority of the chicken pieces were small, and there’re just some pieces with a good bite of chicken.
I tasted a lot of fried and crispy breading, but not a lot of chicken itself. The Chicken McBites’ texture was different from the regular McNuggets; it was not that typical golden-brown breading, but a little heavier, darker, and with only a hint of pepper.
Are They Healthy?
Given that the popcorn chicken is really high in calories (410), fat (25g), and sodium, no, chicken McBites are not extremely healthy. But McDonald’s served them in 3 sizes, so if you are on some dietary restrictions, you can just go for the smaller size and skip your sauce.
Another choice is to get the six-piece Chicken McNuggets. Albeit it weighs more, it’s fewer fat and calories. Since your chicken McBites are smaller, they’ve more surface for the batter to stick to, adding to the calorie and fat content.
Are They Worth It?
The idea was excellent, but the execution of it was a bit off. The chicken pieces were really small, meaning there was a lot of batter than the chicken itself. If the batter tasted very similar as McNuggets, perhaps I’d have liked them more, but the breading was too heavy and starchy. For the value and the price, I would say that the chicken McBites were not worth it.
One thing McDonald’s is good at doing is making food that is easy, quick, and reasonably priced, which they achieved here. The chicken McBites did not really wow me, but they’re okay. If you are searching for the popcorn chicken that is currently accessible, the Popcorn Nuggets at KFC probably have the amazing breading, and Popeye’s comes in at a very close second. I would rate McDonald’s McBites at the bottom of this list.
